What Internet Speed Do You Need for IPTV? (HD, FHD and 4K)

The number your provider sells you isn't the number your TV gets. Here's how much you actually need, and how to measure it properly.

Short answer: about 10 Mbps for HD, 25 Mbps for Full HD and 40 Mbps or more for 4K, for each screen playing at once. Two TVs on 4K means you want at least 80 Mbps of real, at-the-TV speed.

Why the advertised speed isn't the real speed

Your plan might say 300 Mbps. That's what arrives at the router, on a good day, through a cable. By the time it crosses two walls on Wi-Fi to a Firestick behind the TV, it can easily be a fifth of that.

How to test properly

  1. Run the test on the TV device itself. On a Firestick, the free Analiti or Speedtest app works.
  2. Run it in the evening, around when you'd normally watch.
  3. Run it twice. Ignore the first if it looks unusually high or low.

A quick reference

  • Under 10 Mbps: stick to HD feeds, and expect the odd pause on busy nights.
  • 10 to 25 Mbps: HD is reliable, Full HD usually fine on one screen.
  • 25 to 50 Mbps: Full HD on two screens, or 4K on one.
  • 50 Mbps and up: 4K on more than one screen.

Speed isn't everything

A steady 30 Mbps beats a jumpy 100. If your result swings wildly between tests, the cause is usually Wi-Fi interference, and a cable or the 5 GHz band will help more than upgrading your plan.

The free Prime IPTV trial is the most honest speed test there is: run a live game at 8 PM and see.
